On the Independence Day, the solemn March of Independence was held on Khreshchatyk - the central street of Kyiv.
After the solemn hoisting of the National Flag and performance of the Anthem, Minister of Defense Stepan Poltorak heard the report of commander of the March of Independence - Anatoliy Pushniakov and drove along the lined units.
Then, the Head of State started the March of Independence.
In the course of the speech of the President, the attendees honored the memory of the fallen heroes who died in the battles for free and independent Ukraine with a moment of silence.
In the course of the March of Independence, the Head of State presented regimental flags with honors of the President - ribbon "For Courage and Valor" to the commanders of 14 military units that proved themselves in hostilities in the east of Ukraine. The flags were also handed by NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov, Minister of Defense Stepan Poltorak, Chief of the General Staff Viktor Muzhenko, Acting Commander of the National Guard Mykola Balan and Head of the State Borde Service Viktor Nazarenko.
The President congratulated the militaries on the Independence Day and expressed gratitude for their service.
Upon completion of the ceremony of presenting the flags, the units solemnly marched on Khreshchatyk.
Petro Poroshenko had a short conversation with Kyiv residents who came to Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Khreshchatyk to congratulate the participants of the March.
